Candidate for Director-at-Large Shauntee Burns-Simpson

91´«Ã½

Shauntee Burns-Simpson is the director of youth and family services at the DC Public Library. She brings a wealth of experience to this role, having previously served as the associate director of the Center for Educators & Schools at the New York Public Library. From 2020 to 2022, Burns-Simpson served as the president of the Black Caucus of the 91´«Ã½ (BC91´«Ã½), where she advocated for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the library profession. She has also chaired the Committee on Diversity for the 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) and currently serves as a board trustee for the Freedom to Read Foundation.

Burns-Simpson is dedicated to connecting communities, especially at-risk teens, with the transformative resources of public libraries. She is passionate about fostering a love of reading and learning through innovative programming. In recognition of her impactful contributions to the field, she was honored with the 2023 Demco Award for Excellence in Librarianship.

She earned her master of library and information science (MLIS) degree from Queens College in Queens, NY. Outside of her professional life, Burns-Simpson enjoys spending time with family and friends, dancing, laughing, and traveling, finding joy in connecting with others and experiencing new places and cultures.
