The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an internationally preeminent science facility, operated by Stanford University at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory on behalf of the Department of Energy, Office of Science. This facility provides world-leading scientific capabilities to a global user community, covering a very broad research portfolio that includes the development of advanced materials and chemical catalysts for clean energy systems; drug discovery for modern pharmaceuticals; and fundamental studies of astrophysical phenomena.
We are seeking a candidate to fill the position of Knowledge Retention Librarian. The successful candidate will help develop and maintain a catalog of internally generated content. The functionality of the catalog will simplify how we make our operational information available within the laboratory. The catalog will organize knowledge in the form of digital content such as document files, databases and websites.
The successful candidate will join the Process Integration Team within the LCLS X-ray Operations Division of LCLS.
Note: This is a 36 months fixed term position with the possibility of extension or conversion to a regular- continuing position.
SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park; CA. Due to COVID-19-related curtailment of on-site activities, the job duties for this position may be required to be performed from home until full site access is restored.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Selecting library materials and information resources in a well-defined area, including responsibility for collection management and preservation decision-making.
- Organizing knowledge in the form of digital content such as document files, databases and websites.
- Develop bibliographic and reference links.
- Developing a cataloging system for internal knowledge including design and implementation
- Leading the effort to populate the catalog with internal knowledge by demonstrating and promoting content submission
- Curating catalog entries for quality and completeness
- Ongoing improvements to the knowledge retention strategy and tools at LCLS Assisting scientists, engineers, associates and staff with cataloging the content they have generated that will be of interest to others within the laboratory.
- Evaluating and making recommendations to management on plans, operations and policies for a library unit.
- Providing recommendations for electronic resource tools.
- Consultation on organization of information within LCLS
To be successful in this position, you will bring:
- Advanced degree in Library or Information Science, relevant academic discipline or working experience in related fields.
- An understanding of catalog development
- An interest in organizing broad information that are both structured and unstructured
- An understanding and proficiency in databases
- A tenacity for interacting with others to identify new and existing information
- An interest in understanding technical content at a level necessary for categorization
- Knowledge and experience in electronic document and metadata management, including identification, creation, use, retrieval, access, and retention
- Exceptional communication skills both written and verbal
- Proven ability to work independently, one on one and in team environments
In addition, preferred requirements include:
- A proficiency with wiki type tools like confluence
- Knowledge of API development is desirable
