YALSA Strategic Plan

Preface

The strategic plan offers YALSA the unique opportunity to prepare for potential disruptive changes occurring while it also develops resources and tools to help its members anticipate trends and address them proactively.

Over the past few years, YALSA has been challenged with staffing transitions and an expired strategic plan. As it eyes the next stage in its future, YALSA sought a qualified strategic planning expert that was skilled to help the Association review the past, examine the present, address current trends, anticipate what lies on the horizon and where YALSA wants to be in the future. The result of this process created a foundational plan to help the organization remain nimble and forward-thinking while embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion principles throughout the organization. YALSA realizes that current trends require the Association’s thought leaders to consider new ideas and paths to help YALSA and its members to be nimble, but also proactive in their efforts to advance the strategic and visionary direction for young adult services in the nation and around the world. It also realizes the importance of using data – specifically research conducted with YALSA members, non-members, and prospects – to inform its decision-making and its efforts to prioritize future initiatives.

The consultant fielded two separate surveys, one for members and one for non-members. The questions in each were very similar, with slight modifications to ensure applicability for each audience. The member survey included 40 questions which participants spent an average of 10 minutes completing. The non-member survey included 35 questions which participants spent an average of 8 minutes completing.

The survey was in the field for two weeks from March 2 March 16, 2021.

The table above contains statistical information about the number of invitations and responses as well as the statistical significance of responses to each survey.

Note that the number of respondents to each question varies since some questions were optional and a variable number of individuals skipped certain questions. The actual number of respondents for each question is indicated as “n=#” on the analysis slides.

Statistical Significance: Based on the population and sample sizes, we have achieved an extremely high level of confidence and relatively low margin of error as it relates to the results. In summary, for the member survey, we can be 99% certain that the responses presented are representative of the entire membership with a confidence interval of +/ 5%. Therefore, when looking at the response percentages, they represent the full membership within a range of plus or minus 5% of the reported percentage. Most researchers are comfortable at the 95% and +/ 5% level of confidence and margin of error, which we achieved for the non-member survey.

For many questions, results from equivalent questions in the member and non-member surveys are not statistically different.
