Most enjoyable international library project/projects:
As Associate Librarian of Congress for Library Services I have been blessed with unusually extensive opportunities to participate in international library projects. I have served as an IFLA officer from 1989 to the present - chairing the Professional Board, serving on the Governing Board and Executive Committee, and now chairing the Committee on Copyright and Other Legal Matters. I have also been a member of the Organizing Committee for all four US-China librarian conferences and served as a UNESCO expert on commissions concerned with the future of the national libraries of Russia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and now Latvia. But the specific international program that brought me the greatest personal and professional satisfaction was serving on the Library Board of the OSI Soros-Budapest Foundation from its inception in 1994 until 1999. Working with colleagues from the US, UK and Russia I had a unique opportunity to help train librarians and shape libraries and librarianship in the countries of the former Soviet Union at a time at a critical moment in their history.
