Behind the Bans: How Censorship Impacts Our Communities

Book bans have reached historic and unprecedented highs in the last three years. Libraries and schools have been inundated by attempts to remove books and cancel programs, especially those by or about LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC individuals. Authors Eliot Schrefer (Queer Ducks (and Other Animals), The Darkness Outside Us), Patricia McCormick (Sold), and Christina Soontornvat (The Squad (The Tryout #2)) will be joined by the 91´«Ã½ Office for Intellectual Freedom’s Joyce McIntosh and Jack Phoenix (Cayahoga Falls Library) for a discussion about the impact of censorship on libraries, readers, and authors; why it’s so essential to protect the stories that are being targeted by censors; and how we can stand up for the right to read.

Join Honorary Chair Ava DuVernay and Youth Chair Julia Garnett for a powerful Banned Books Week conversation, airing on the . DuVernay, the visionary director behind Selma and 13th, is an advocate for education and free expression. Two of her films have been inspired by frequently challenged books: A Wrinkle in Time, based on the book by Madeleine L’Engle, and Origin, which centers on the life of Isabel Wilkerson, the author of Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Garnett, a youth advocate recognized by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, is a leader in the National Coalition Against Censorship's Student Advocates for Speech program, educating other students about advocacy.
Celebrating the Freedom To Read: Book Banning, Censorship, and Democracy

Beating Book Bans: Perspectives on Fighting Censorship

When actor and author Maulik Pancholy's anti-bullying talk at a Pennsylvania school was canceled due to objections to his activism and "lifestyle" as an openly gay man, the community rallied behind him, with students and supporters successfully reversing the decision at a school board meeting.
All around the country, community advocates are uniting on behalf of libraries and censored authors. Maulik, Banned Books Week Youth Honorary Chair Julia Garnett and parent advocate Claire Bennett will share their personal stories of censorship and advocacy with library director and 91´«Ã½ Policy Corps member Jennie Pu. From Maulik’s canceled school visit, to Julia’s work for student representation, to Claire's experience with student-led, mentor/parent-supported advocacy, this event will explore how different voices can come together to combat censorship.

Join Teen Librarian Brandon Digwood and a panel of library workers for a discussion of the ways in which television and comic books originating from Japan were altered from the original way in which they were presented. The focus will be on the historical ways manga and anime were censored when they became popular media in the 1990s and early 2000s, concluding with a look on how censorship continues to take place in these formats today.

Free Your Mind is an all-ages evening event of conversation and music, centered on storytelling and free speech, and will feature renowned, bestselling One World authors Ta-Nehisi Coates (The Message, Between the World and Me, The Water Dancer, We Were Eight Years in Power), Nikole Hannah-Jones (The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story), Dr. Ibram X. Kendi (How to be An Antiracist, Stamped from the Beginning), and Bryan Stevenson (Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption), as well as Jason Hernandez (author of a forthcoming memoir) and Brea Baker (Rooted). These writers will be joined by Skip Dye, Chair of the Intellectual Freedom Taskforce at Penguin Random House; the event will be hosted by LaTosha Brown of Black Voters Matter, and will feature members of the Atlanta community who have been impacted by book bans.
