I have always appreciated the varied groups and avenues to engage with ACRL. As a "seasoned" librarian I have held various positions within academic libraries, and ACRL has either served as an avenue for me to gain knowledge or to share what I've learned. Much in the same way, the organization consists of individuals with varied experiences who are willing to provide some advice, a sympathetic ear when things don’t quite go your way, or celebrate with you when things go well. I’ve also appreciated that throughout my career my involvement within ACRL has been able to grow or diminish depending on how much time I could devote as my career path changed.

Academic libraries typically have a unique place on campus as a department that works with all others, whether they are an academic department or a support service. They also support students who are on campus, distant students, and/or are online. As an academic librarian my focus has been to contribute to the success of all and so my goal has been to be as flexible and open as possible. This has not only been in terms of the services I provide, but in the learning I do, and the willingness to fumble through something new with someone. Librarians have essentially collected information (in all forms), organized it and then helped people access it. So I strive to be the conduit on my campus to connect people with what they need. Whether it be a referral to another library employee, person or office on campus, service or product, workshop or training, an introduction to doing research, or directions to the nearest restroom.

As with so many others, I didn't start college with the idea of becoming a librarian. I received a work study position in the library as a freshman and luckily worked with librarians who shared their joy and knowledge of how libraries can make a difference in a students life. When it came time to graduate I couldn't imagine moving on to my "chosen" career and leaving the library. It's a choice I've never regretted. Not only have I been able to help others with their needs, but I've continually had opportunities to learn and grow and to work with incredible people. Yes there have been good and bad times, and a lot of pivots, but there have always been others in the library willing to share their joy and knowledge.
