My work with ACRL's Access Services Interest Group has added a depth of meaning to my daily work as a manager and Access Services librarian that I'm embarrassed to say I was unaware I was missing. I've found community among information professionals experiencing the same challenges and enjoying the same successes at both the personal and institutional level. And I've gained access to a network of expertise, memory, and caution that's aided me in countless tough calls and fun ideas alike. All of which has me, in this moment, grateful to work in a profession receptive of whatever possible impact I might have and grateful-er still for all my colleagues with whom I'll make it.

Often viewed as a stepping stone to other more authentic or impactful careers in academia, I've made a home in the craft of Access Services, which I see as the avant-garde of contemporary librarianship. It’s practices are a direct reflection of the state of the art. It's practitioners some of our most thoughtful and articulate troublemakers. Their daily work activates at the intersection of labor, equity, identity, power, and access. And their solutions agitate the dominant ideologies about which most think nothing can be done. And yet, right now, they are in the library, doing things. Instigating change. Advocating for themselves, their coworkers, the scholars they serve, and the profession as a whole. Developing their honed and tested counter rhetoric to properly describe the access they facilitate, the institutional contributions they generate, and the daily experience of their lived political reality as librarianship’s advancing guard.
