Librarians are "value-added" when we are included in strategic planning, committee service, academic leadership initiatives, new program development, and more. At my campus, I have been involved in shared governance through Faculty Senate, service on important campus-wide committees, various task forces that formed new programs or recommended changes in policy, in successful accreditation, and in assessment. Our roles extend far beyond collection development and research assistance, although those are vital functions in the academic library. Librarians excel at systems thinking, at identifying problems and possible solutions, at listening, at critical thinking, at categorization and organization, at creative thinking, at recognizing inclusive practices and so much more. Our roles as academic librarians should extend outside of the library as much as possible. We add value to any campus activity.

I absolutely love to research and go through the writing process. That helps me help students and faculty. For example, I have been part of the scholarly conversation, so when students ask how do you know when you have researched enough, I am able to answer using my own experience. When new faculty want to know what journals to target, I am able to suggest titles which will help them reach tenure. I kind of fell into librarianship by working for the library as a student worker, but I can't imagine any other career that provides such variety and opportunity for growth.
