Attending ACRL 2018 as a new academic librarian exposed me to a range of topics and challenges shared by colleagues from across the nation. ACRL publications and the ACRL Members Digest emails provide a perspective on services and concerns that I wouldn’t be aware of otherwise. I’m also grateful that ACRL included my map collection review workbook among its digital publications in 2023.

As Geospatial Information Librarian, I connect geospatial faculty, students and staff, from a variety of disciplines, to geographic information systems (GIS) resources. I provide consultations, workshops, libguides, and monthly meetups that connect our campus geospatial community to learning and networking opportunities as well as to technical support. As an administrator for our academic ArcGIS Online organization, I support faculty members by setting up collaborative mapping groups for their classes and research. I’ve also served as advisor to the student geospatial club. I’ve also represented the library on campus in outreach events and in other ways.

I became an academic librarian late in my overall career (which was mostly in the private sector, creating mapped data), without a degree in librarianship. I’ve found my new profession to be rewarding, welcoming, educational, challenging, fun, collegial, perspective-broadening, and humbling. I’ve learned a lot as I’ve helped our campus community learn more about maps and geospatial tools and methods. My somewhat-daunting leap to a new career in 2016 has led to some great outcomes all around!
