I just read "Transforming the Academy: Faculty Perspectives on Diversity and Pedagogy," edited by Sarah Willie-LeBreton, and I’m about to jump into "The Water Cure" by Sophie Mackintosh - once I finish one of the four fantasy novels I’ve been reading on the side!

Community, research, work-in-progress.

What do you value about ACRL?

I value the ability to connect with other librarians across the country. I’m a huge believer in improvement through learning from others, especially those very different from myself. ACRL is a uniquely powerful community because of the focus on academic work, research, and rigorous standards - it’s the best way I’ve found to establish together what our profession should look like and do, even if that work must (and really ought to) remain ever aspirational and never complete.

What do you as an academic librarian contribute to your campus?

My position supports our Library Director, so my contributions are two-fold. First, to ACRL, by creating resources such as the President’s Program EDI Blog which I can also bring directly to our campus. Second, to UW Tacoma, by helping convey the message of the library to our students and faculty via our website and social media news stories.

I’ve only been a degreed, official librarian for a year now, and since my current position is temporary I’m still trying to find my place. But ever since my first day of library school, I’ve stayed because of the people. No other community has felt so affirming of the values I hold: that everyone should get to learn, and grow, and connect with the world. I’m honored to think that we can help make that happen.
