Dedicated, organized, enthusiastic.
I am reading "The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm: Tales from Alagaësia," by Christopher Paolini. I'm a huge fan of his Inheritance Cycle and was beyond excited to discover that he's recently published a new book in this series!
Community, education, advocacy.
I value the many educational opportunities ACRL offers to members. Also, there are so many groups and divisions it's easy for you to find one that's related to the work you do and get involved.
I help promote and support many of the affordable education initiatives that the Miami University Libraries and Miami University offer, including grant programs that help faculty discover, use, and create open educational resources (OER). I also serve as the copyright librarian. In this role I answer questions for members of the campus community about copyright. I also help our faculty and students learn about the rights granted to them under the law as the creators of copyrightable works and best practices for managing these rights, e.g. reading and negotiating a publication agreement or using Creative Commons licensing when sharing works with others.
One of the things I love most about being a librarian is that there are so many opportunities to continue our education and expand our knowledge. This could involve reading an interesting book discovered in the stacks, learning alongside our faculty and students during research consultations or class instruction, or participating in webinars, workshops, and conferences. Find an area of librarianship you're passionate about and seek-out opportunities to learn more about it! Then, when you feel ready, seek out opportunities to share your knowledge on the topic with others.
