Demas and Brogdon investigate the topic of how to determine copyright status for titles under consideration for preservation reformatting or for scanning for the digital library. Using a project and methodology undertaken at Cornell University for their example, the authors clearly and concisely address issues including how to determine copyright status, defining a standard for reasonable effort in determining copyright, and the relative costs and merits of searching alternative sources. The topic and the authors' presentation are significant to several areas represented by ALCTS, including preservation, acquisitions, and technical services processing to enhance patron access to materials. The article is well-written, interesting, and practical. It is a well researched, logical presentation of a complicated issue and a welcome addition to the literature of technical services.
