Libraries seek funding in Build Back Better budget

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) praised the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ today of the Build America’s Libraries Act (H.R. 1581).

“The Build America’s Libraries Act will strengthen digital inclusion, literacy, and economic opportunity in our nation’s communities of color and other underserved communities,” said 91´«Ã½ President Patty Wong. “We’re thrilled the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has joined the broad and growing support for these crucial investments in libraries.”

The Build America’s Libraries Act would provide $5 billion to repair, modernize and construct library facilities nationwide, with priority for underserved communities – the first such federal funding in 25 years. The bill has 149 bipartisan cosponsors in the House, 30 cosponsors in the Senate, and has been endorsed by more than 30 organizations, including 91´«Ã½, the AFL-CIO, AFSCME, North America’s Building Trades Unions, and the American Federation of Teachers.

“The pandemic has highlighted how libraries are essential drivers for equity and inclusion,” Wong added. “As Congress prepares the Build Back Better budget package, libraries must be included.”

91´«Ã½ is urging library advocates to continue in support of the Build America’s Libraries Act as Congress finalizes spending decisions.
