CHICAGO - The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½), and the Notable Children's Digital Media committee, formerly the Great Websites committee, is excited to announce its inaugural list of great digital media for children.
To highlight the shift in media focus the committee has concentrated on apps for this year’s selections. Future lists will include a diverse array of digital media for children up to age 14, including websites and video streaming. The 2018 Notable Children’s Digital Media committee has selected 15 apps that span diverse subjects from mindfulness to math. These apps introduce rich topics and engaging activities and provide a platform for play and imagination.
“The Notable Children’s Digital Media committee has excitedly embraced the expansion of our mission to include the evaluation of any high-quality, interactive media content or product that is available via digital device, that enables and encourages active joint media engagement while informing, educating, and/or entertaining in a developmentally appropriate way,” said committee co-Chair Alia Shields. “In an effort to maximize the accessibility of our list, for this first rendition of the committee, we focused our efforts on evaluating free or very low-cost apps across multiple platforms, resulting in a list of fifteen apps of commendable quality.”
“We congratulate the Notable Children’s Digital Media committee on this excellent list,” said Andrew Medlar, chair of the ALSC Digital Media Awards Implementation Task Force. “It will support adults in guiding young people to digital content that enables and encourages active engagement and social interaction in the most developmentally appropriate way.”
