New advanced eCourse: Copyright 101

91´«Ã½

CHICAGO — 91´«Ã½ Publishing in collaboration with the San Jose State University School of Information (SJSU iSchool), is offering a new 12-week , beginning on Sept. 14, 2015 and facilitated by Mary Minow.

For today’s librarian, copyright is everywhere. Whether you’re dealing with print or digital materials, it’s difficult to work with a library collection without wading into the murky waters of copyright — for many of us, it’s even hard to know where to start. When your education doesn’t give you a background in copyright law, you might find yourself in over your head. If copyright isn’t your forte and you are in need of building your knowledge from the ground up – fear not, we have you covered with this new advanced eCourse!

In 12 weeks, Mary Minow—attorney, librarian and copyright expert—will develop your skills on what you need to know about copyright. Throughout the course you will go from copyright novice to a librarian who is capable of assisting patrons with a wide range of copyright issues—from open access and creative commons to licensing and digital rights management. You’ll come out of the eCourse equipped with tools to develop copyright policies for you and your staff.

This eCourse will provide you with the ability to:

  • explain copyright provisions in U.S. law that have particularly strong impacts on public access to information, particularly with regard to libraries and library users;
  • consider the core values of the library profession concerning open access to information;
  • develop concrete skills to help libraries flourish in the digital age of copyright, including advocacy skills;
  • understand broad developments that affect access to information such as international copyright relations, the open access movement, and creative commons;
  • appreciate emerging issues in licensing and digital rights management that have enormous implications for content control above and beyond copyright concerns

Participants who complete this advanced eCourse will receive an SJSU iSchool/91´«Ã½ Publishing Advanced Certificate of Completion. This certificate will affirm your status as having completed all the steps of an advanced eCourse on Copyright 101 and will provide proof of your participation that you can add to your resume.

The course will be delivered entirely online with coursework completed asynchronously. Within the week-by-week format, students will be able to work at their own pace and interact with Minow and fellow students through emails and message boards without the constraints of attending a live session at a specific time. The begins on Monday, Sept. 14, 2015.

Mary Minow is counsel to the Califa Group and a library law consultant on issues of copyright, privacy, intellectual freedom and related issues. She is a co-author of The Library's Legal Answer Book, and manages the website for the Stanford Copyright & Fair Use Center.
