CHICAGO -- Public voting for 36 Conversation Starter talks and Ignite Sessions again tipped the balance in selecting the ones that showcase your colleagues’ newest passions and innovations during the 2014 Annual Conference. Conversation Starter talks are fast-paced 45-minute sessions intended to jumpstart conversations and highlight emerging topics and trends. Ignite speakers present for exactly five minutes on what they’re most passionate about in the library world and inspire the audience to join them. Each five-minute Ignite talk is accompanied by 20 slides, each displayed for 15 seconds, with slides advancing automatically. The 36 sessions will be held throughout the conference in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The emerging topics, trends and innovations addressed in the 36 sessions range widely, including: connecting teens through YouTube; word-based classification; community/campus collaboration and engagement; TumblarianTalk; “secret shopping;” open-source software; presentation pointers; Pinterest and digital archives; underserved populations; makerspaces and making; thriving as a young leader; the Library as Incubator Project; early literacy; using data; the SuperPAC EveryLibrary; revving up storytimes; Illinois’ Soon to be Famous project; and the blurring lines between media, form and genre.

The Conversation Starter lead presenters (some with additional speakers) are: Christina Fuller-Gregory, Wen-Ying Lu, Elizabeth Skinner, Elizabeth Psyck, Peter Struzziero, Justin Hoenke, Cory Eckert, Holly Storck-Post, Ben Bizzle, Benjo Barton, Ady Huertas, Jacob Berg, Katie Anderson, Kate Kosturski and Michele Woods.

Ignite Session lead presenters (some with additional speakers) are: Rebecca Carlson, Laura Lowe, Matt Krueger, Erin Reilly-Sanders, Juliana Nykolaiszyn, Caris O’Malley, Kelly McElroy, Andrea Snyder, Kendra Jones, Cynthia Crosser, Olivia Miller, Laura Costello, Melissa Gonzalez, Jordan Moore, Yvonne Becker, Mary Wagoner, Julia Mielish and Julie Stam.

The public votes counted for 30 percent of the selection process; staff votes accounted for another 30 percent; the remaining 40 percent were an advisory group of 91´«Ã½ members.
