ALSC selects popular books for young readers

CHICAGO — Featuring contributions by active librarians from around the country, “,” published by for the , offers a goldmine of quality books for children. Edited by Diane Foote, this guide spotlights more than 500 titles published within the last four years. Ranging from books for newborns through readers to age 14, the selected books encompass a wide variety of formats and themes to reflect the diversity of contemporary society. Equally useful for readers' advisory and collection development, the book includes:

  • high-quality, well-reviewed books that are popular with kids;
  • only original titles, eliminating derivative works such as those based on a movie or licensed characters;
  • picture books, graphic novels, poetry, informational books, fiction and more;
  • thorough annotations, with summary, author and publication information;
  • multiple indexes for easy searching by title, author, type of book, genre, award-winners and subject matter.

Foote is assistant dean at Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science in River Forest, Ill., and is currently serving as fiscal officer and a member of the board of directors for ALSC. She was a member of the 2010 John Newbery Award Selection Committee and the 2011 and 2012 Coretta Scott King Book Award juries and co-chaired the ALSC Preconference Planning Committee for the 2013 event that celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Caldecott Medal. She is a former executive director of ALSC and a former associate editor of Book Links magazine.



For more than eight decades, librarians from ALSC have intensely scrutinized the children's books published each year, selecting the winning and honor books for the Newbery and Caldecott Awards. In addition, the ALSC division of the 91ý is committed to creating a nation of readers, starting with the youngest.
