CHICAGO — Jeanie Austin, project coordinator for Mix IT Up! at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's Graduate School of Library and Information Science, will present her paper, "Critical Issues in Juvenile Detention Libraries," at YALSA’s Trends Impacting Young Adult Services event, sponsored by YALSA’s past presidents. The presentation will take place from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 at 91´«Ã½’s Midwinter Meeting in Dallas.

Austin’s presentation will explore the tensions present in juvenile detention center library services, such as institutional limitations and access to technology and how youth and librarians can navigate these tensions within the library setting.

“I hope my work will provide a frame for understanding the complex processes involved in working with youth, especially youth located in detention centers. Many young adult librarians are already navigating the issues described in my paper— limitations related to technologies, the ability and willingness of youth to voice their needs and interests,” Austin said. “Discussing these processes can legitimize the experiences of young adult librarians working with diverse populations.”

Mary Arnold, a YALSA past president and chair of the Midwinter Meeting Paper Presentation Planning Committee, said the committee selected Austin for demonstrating “the crucial role books, reading and lifelong library services can play in helping foster resiliency and a sense of self-worth in at-risk and underserved young adults in our communities.”
