CHICAGO - Betsy Appleton, electronic resources librarian at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., has been selected as the ALCTS-sponsored Emerging Leader for 2010-2011. The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, ALCTS, sponsors one Emerging Leader who has chosen collections and technical services as a career and is a member of ALCTS.

In her current position, Appleton coordinates and manages the library’s electronic resources program through identifying, evaluating, licensing, acquisition, cataloging and troubleshooting of the electronic resources. In addition she serves as chair of the University Librarians’ Council Professional Development Committee. She volunteers her time by cataloging books for the Lubuto Library Project in Zambia.

Betsy is a member of ALCTS and the 91´«Ã½ New Members Roundtable. She is active in the North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) serving as publicist for NASIG publications and the Public Relations Committee. In 2008, she was the recipient of the NASIG Horizon Award recognizing new leaders in serials.

She received her undergraduate degree in English from Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minn. and her library degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

For her Emerging Leader project, Betsy selected the ALCTS sponsored Preservation Week Marketing Plan project, which will greatly benefit the Preservation Week initiative begun in 2010 by ALCTS in partnership with the Library of Congress and IMLS. Preservation Week information may be found at:

After her year in the Emerging Leader Program, Betsy will serve a one-year term as intern to the ALCTS Board of Directors.
