Outstanding speaker lineup for RUSA’s older adults library services preconference

CHICAGO — The Reference Services Section (RSS) of the Reference and User Services Association has brought together an outstanding speaker lineup for its 2011 Annual preconference focused on library services for those in the 55+ demographic who use library resources to find employment and volunteer opportunities in their communities.

The half-day preconference, “Effective Library Service to Older Adults Seeking Employment and Volunteer Opportunities,” will describe various library programs to address the needs of older patrons who come to the library for these job and volunteer-related services, as well as provide an overview of prospective partners, including resources that may be available through the Workforce Investment Act and the Corporation for National and Community Service. The event will be held from 8 a.m. - noon Friday, June 24, 2011 at one of the Annual Conference hotels in New Orleans and will include the following expert speakers:

  • Emily Allen, director, Workforce Initiatives, AARP Foundation
  • Susan Hildreth, director, Institute for Museum and Library Services
  • Mary Boone, state librarian, State Library of North Carolina
  • Carol Crecy, director, Center for Communications and Consumer Affairs, Department of Health and Human Services Administration on Aging
  • Delania Adkins, head Librarian, Pike County, Kentucky Library District
  • Lorraine Borowski, director, Decorah (Iowa) Public Library
  • Barbara Mates, author,“ 5 Star Programming for Your 55+ Library Customers”

Interested participants have the option to for just a RUSA preconference, or for both a preconference and the Annual Conference. For preconference-only registration using the , select “SO-Preconference and Ticketed Events Only” as the registration type and proceed to select this event from the list of ticketed events. Conference registrants can add this event to their registration and will find it under the list of ticketed events and preconferences in the online form. Advance registration rates for the “Effective Library Service to Older Adults” preconference start at $125 for RUSA members and are available through May 13—prices will increase after that date. for all RUSA preconferences will close Sunday, June 19.
