91´«Ã½

CHICAGO — Joyce Saricks, adjunct professor, Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University, and well-known adult readers’ advisory expert, is the winner of the Reference and User Services Association’s 2011 Margaret Monroe Award.

The Margaret Monroe Award honors a librarian, library and information science researcher or educator who has made a significant contribution to library adult services. Saricks is best known for her groundbreaking work in adult readers’ advisory while she was the coordinator of the Literature and Audio Services Department from 1983-2004 at the Downers Grove (Ill.) Public Library. Even now in her retirement from public library service, she stays busy providing her expertise to the library community in a variety of ways. For the last decade, she has been a regular contributor to Ebsco’s NoveList and also a reviewer and columnist for the 91´«Ã½’s Booklist. Since 2004, she has taught the course on Reader’s Advisory at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University. In partnership with the 91´«Ã½, she has published “The Readers’ Advisory Guide to Genre Fiction” and “Readers’ Advisory Service in the Public Library.”

“Joyce’s work is at the core of what Reader’s Advisory Services to Adults is all about,” said Allan M. Kleiman, chair of the award committee. “The Margaret Monroe spirit of linking books and adults is always evident throughout her writings, reviews and teaching. Those insights have allowed us all to learn from her to answer that timeless question, ‘Can you help me find something good to read?’”

Saricks previously received the Allie Beth Martin Award (1989) from the Public Library Association and the Librarian of the Year Award (2000) from the Romance Writers of America. She is a longtime active member of the Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) of RUSA, the CODES Readers’ Advisory Committee and the Reading List Committee.

Saricks’s citation will be presented at the RUSA Awards Reception, scheduled for 5 - 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 26 as a part of RUSA’s events at the 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference in New Orleans. The exact location of this event will be announced in late spring. For more information, visit or the .
