Piercy Award to Marielle Veve

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) has named Marielle Veve, cataloging and metadata librarian and interim metadata leader at Hodges Library, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tenn., the winner of the 2011 Esther J. Piercy Award. The award will be presented on Sunday, June 26, at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony during the 2011 American Librarian Association (91´«Ã½) Annual Conference in New Orleans.
Veve has demonstrated innovative thinking and leadership in her work in libraries, her contributions to library associations and particularly her research and publications. She is the author or co-author of several articles on topics such as FRAD (Functional Requirements for Authority Data) and support of multiple metadata schema and has presented on numerous subjects at national and local conferences. Appointed to committees of 91´«Ã½, ALCTS and other professional associations, Veve is a Provost’s Junior Faculty Fellow at her institution and an adjunct instructor in the distance program of the University of Tennessee’s School of Information Sciences. Through her teaching and publications, particularly her "Streaming Guide to Cataloging Remote Access Multimedia," and her articles on non-MARC workflows, Veve is making significant contributions to development and application of new methods in technical services librarianship. She exhibits all the qualities represented by the Esther J. Piercy Award.
The Esther J. Piercy Award was established by ALCTS in 1968 in memory of Esther J. Piercy, editor of Journal of Cataloging and Classification from 1950 to 1956 and of Library Resources & Technical Services from 1957 to 1967. The Piercy Award recognizes the contributions to those areas of librarianship included in library collections and technical services by a librarian with no more than 10 years of professional experience who has shown outstanding promise for continuing contribution and leadership. The recipient receives a $1,500 grant donated by YPB, Inc., and a citation in recognition of his/her accomplishments.
