PLA and ALSC launch digital edition of the Every Child Ready to Read® Toolkit

91´«Ã½

CHICAGO — The Public Library Association (PLA) and the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) have jointly launched a digital edition of the toolkit, an early literacy resource for public libraries and other early literacy centers. Available for the first time with instant digital access, this edition mirrors the content and resources of its paper counterpart.

The Every Child Ready to Read® (ECRR) Second Edition is a toolkit of resources that enables users to present workshops that help prepare parents and caregivers for their critical role as their child's first teacher. The workshops demonstrate how parents, grandparents, childcare providers, and preschool teachers can use five simple research-based practices—talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing—to develop language and pre-reading skills in children from birth to age five. For the first time, these invaluable resources are conveniently available in digital format.

The digital toolkit’s contents include:

  • Introduction and early literacy background;
  • PowerPoint presentations and talking points for eight workshops;
  • Instructions to customize presentations;
  • Participant handouts to reinforce workshop content;
  • Booklists; and
  • PDF files to print your own bookmarks, posters, and brochures.

The eight workshops cover topics ranging from the “Early Literacy and Learning Spaces Workshop,” which discusses how to use design principles to create a supportive and encouraging environment for early literacy skills, to community partner-specific and parent-specific workshops. Additionally, some of the workshops present five early literacy practices alongside activities on specialized topics such as “Fun with Science and Math,” “Fun with Words,” and more.
