PHILADELPHIA – The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF), a division of the 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½), will sponsor several programs focused on advocacy at the 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference, including “Nuts & Bolts for Trustees, Friends and Foundations.”

ALTAFF’s popular Nuts & Bolts program will feature speakers addressing topics of interest to Friends, Trustees, Foundations and citizen advocates, followed by roundtable discussions geared toward each group on topics that include fundraising and book sales. Meet and greet with coffee begins at 8:30 a.m. A boxed lunch will be served at noon. Register for the Advocacy Institute (1 - 4:30 p.m.) and receive a discount on combined registration. Attendees are encouraged to bring brochures, flyers and other library marketing materials to share. The Advocacy Institute Workshop “Boomers, Staff & Students – Engaging the Many Voices of Advocacy” will be held following Nuts & Bolts from 1 - 4 p.m. on Friday, June 24 at the Marriott Convention Center, River Bend 2. This workshop will explore ways to mobilize baby boomers, library staff and students as library advocates. Speakers include Buffy Hamilton, high school librarian, Creekview High School, Canton, Ga.; Carla Lehn, library programs consultant, California State Library; Pamela Sandlian Smith, director, Rangeview Library District, Colo., and Vivian Wynn, chair, Federal Library Legislative and Advocacy Network (FLLAN). The workshop is presented by the Advocacy Training Subcommittee of the Committee on Library Advocacy, in partnership with ALTAFF. Tickets cost $50 advance, and $75 onsite. Event code: AL9. “How Louisiana Libraries Created New Beginnings,” ALTAFF’s Specialized Outreach Services luncheon, will be held from 12:30 - 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 25 at the JW Marriott, New Orleans. Find out how three diverse individuals have faced change in their libraries and communities and learn how they have joined forces with staff, Trustees, Friends, local politicians and the community to make it all come together and create new beginnings for their libraries. Speakers include Katelyn Ramsey Castleberry, Friends of the New Orleans Public Library; Dr. Ron Heezen, director of the Shreve Memorial Public Library, Shreveport, La., and Irvin Mayfield, community activist, library Trustee board president and jazz musician. For those in academic libraries, ALTAFF is offering a “Nuts & Bolts for Academic Friends” from 8 - 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 25 at the Hilton Riverside, Chequers. Friends groups in academic libraries are invited to come together with their peers in this session to discuss issues and trends specific to Friends groups in the academic setting. Those considering starting a Friends group for their college, university or community college library will find this session valuable. Featured speakers will include Samuel T. Huang, associate dean for advancement and development, George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida, and Charles Hanson, director of library services, Kettering University.

“Ensuring the Library’s Place in Your Community” will be held from 10:30 am. to noon on Sat., June 25 at the Morial Convention Center, Room 264. Learn how library supporters and librarians successfully advocated for major federal funding legislation for libraries across the country, as well as how to continue to make the case for libraries at the federal level. Topics of discussion will include protecting e-rate funds, net neutrality, FEMA support and how libraries can access new money.
