The 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) is pleased to announce the selection of Nadine Y. Said of Santa Cruz, California as the 2022 recipient of the Mary V. Gaver Scholarship.
The $3,000 scholarship was established to honor the memory of a past 91´«Ã½ president and Rutgers University professor, who made many contributions to library youth services. The scholarship is awarded to a person pursuing a master's degree in library and information studies, with a specialty in youth services.
Currently, Said works as a teacher-librarian (in-training) at Mission Hill Middle School (Santa Cruz, Calif.). She discovered early in life that “finding a book you enjoy means freedom, and that reading is as unique to an individual as a fingerprint.” In her work as a middle school English Language Arts teacher, Said remarked that she “gravitated towards reluctant readers.” This inspired her to build a large classroom library with a wide variety of reading materials for a variety of reading levels and interests. As her students began to trust her, they began to find themselves as readers through the books they enjoyed, and the support received from Said.
Said commented, that she “looks forward to a future where her experience and education will allow her the opportunity to create library spaces that offer safety and freedom to even the most reluctant of young readers.” One of her goals is to expand her library’s collection with relevant materials for language learners and students with learning disabilities.
Said attends San Jose State University (Calif.).
