In this asynchronous six-week course, participants will learn about artificial intelligence, become familiar with its basic functionality, and identify ways artificial intelligence can be used in reference and user services. The course will utilize asynchronous discussions, one recorded synchronous meeting, readings and videos. The course will end with a discussion of ethical considerations for the use of artificial intelligence in libraries.

This course is designed for all library staff who work with reference and user services. By the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

• Describe artificial intelligence
• Identify ways artificial intelligence can be used in reference and user service
• Consider the ethics of using artificial intelligence in their settings.

The instructor, Lauren Hays, PhD, MLS, is an Assistant Professor of Educational Technology at the University of Central Missouri where she teaches course on educational technology leadership, emerging technologies, and research in educational technology.
