PLA’s new Learning Tapas offers bite-sized professional development for public librarians

CHICAGO – In October, the (PLA) released two new professional development resources exclusively available to PLA members. PLA's new Learning Tapas are quick, self-paced videos with corresponding guidebooks designed to provide a "taste" or introduction to the topic at hand.
The first two Learning Tapas cover gaining effective networking skills and finding a mentor or coach. The COVID-19 crisis has impacted staffing and hiring across many industries, including libraries. Results of in March 2020 reported significant reductions in staffing and planned hiring among public library respondents. In these uncertain times, library professionals may need to grow their professional networks and find industry leaders to help support their careers.
PLA’s Learning Tapas Effective Networking Skills sets the participant up for networking success with guidelines, space for self-reflection, and additional resources. Finding a Mentor or a Coach directs the participant through the journey of finding a mentor, including setting goals, working agreements, and mentee responsibilities.
