The 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) has selected Abbie M. McLean of Ajax, Ontario (Canada) as the 2020 Century Scholarship recipient.
The $2,500 scholarship funds services or accommodation for a library school student with disabilities admitted to an 91´«Ã½-accredited library program.
McLean says that as a young student, she often “found herself hidden in the school library.” She became a voracious reader, “consuming everything on the shelves.” While in the library, McLean would often assist the librarians, who seemed to her to be “magical beings with omniscient knowledge of the library’s inner workings.” They inspired her to want to become a librarian. She says that she has “never even entertained the prospect of another career.” McLean believes that libraries are a vital part of communities. When confronted by those who tell her that libraries are dying, she boldly proclaims that “libraries are our last havens of unbiased information and equitable access to education and resources.”
McLean’s love of for the library profession is obvious to those who know her. One reference stated that McLean is “passionate about libraries, literacy and literature. She has demonstrated a commitment to core library values, including freedom of information and equal access. She is intelligent, creative and a very hard worker.” Another reference commented that McLean is “a motivated, engaged thinker and well-suited to the library profession.” Yet another reference said that McLean has “an outstanding work ethic. She is nonjudgmental and accepting of others’ differences. She has an unabashed enthusiasm for everything library.”
McLean will attend the University of Western Ontario (Canada).
