CHICAGO—The 2020 Lois Mai Chan Professional Development Grant has been awarded to Sol María López, Media Cataloging Coordinator at the Norlin Library, University of Colorado, Boulder. López holds an MSLS from the University of North Texas and a BA in Psychology and Linguistics from New Mexico State University at Las Cruces.

The Lois Mai Chan Professional Development Grant was established in 2017 by the of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) to support travel to the 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) Annual Conference & Exhibition for librarians and paraprofessionals from traditionally underrepresented groups who are new to the metadata field. It encourages professional development through active participation at the national level. The $1,000 grant may be applied towards airfare, lodging and other ticketed events related to attendance of the 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference. The recipient will work with a member of the grant jury or the CaMMS Executive Committee to identify relevant programs and interest group sessions to attend; attend at least one CaMMS program, committee meeting, or interest group meeting; and record their conference experience for .

López began her cataloging career in 2011 as a copy cataloger at the El Paso Community College. She recently served as working group leader of the Access Scope & Infrastructure Working Group of the Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee and has written and presented on topics promoting diversity and inclusion in libraries. In her current work at the University of Colorado, Boulder, López has been actively promoting the use of inclusive subject headings to improve discoverability of materials on undocumented immigrants. López is the winner of several academic honors and awards including the IDEAL Scholarship Award, OVGTSL Diversity Scholarship Award, 91´«Ã½ Annual Travel Grant from Credo Reference, NASIG Horizon Award for a Promising New Information Professional and Beta Mi Phu International Library and Information Studies Honor Society award.

López believes in thinking outside the box to serve a diverse community of users. Her colleagues speak highly of her cataloging work and her passion and initiative for bringing about positive changes in libraries. The Lois Mai Chan award will support López in her work and efforts to network, learn and connect with other professionals who are working towards the promotion of equity, diversity and inclusion in libraries.
