CHICAGO – An article written by American Association of School Librarians (AASL) member Kathy Lester has been published in the January/February 2020 issue of AC&E as part of AASL President Mary Keeling’s presidential initiative to expand efforts in AASL to provide a safe, respectful, and inclusive space for diverse voices and perspectives. Lester’s article, “School Libraries for All Students,” can be read online at .

“Publication in AC&E helps AASL reach a broader educational community with the message that school librarians are equity leaders in their schools,” said AASL President Mary Keeling. “As part of my presidential initiative, we are addressing issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion through multiple messages. School librarians have important roles as partners with all educators in providing resources and rich learning experiences for our most vulnerable young citizens.”

Published six times a year, AC&E is a digital journal focused entirely on educational equity and access. Lester’s article details the many ways school librarians improve learning outcomes, especially for African-American and Hispanic students, economically disadvantaged students, and children with individualized educational plans.

Kathy Lester, school librarian at East Middle School in Plymouth, Michigan, is a member of the AASL Board of Directors as the Regional Director of Region 3. She also currently serves as the past president and current advocacy chair for the Michigan Association for Media in Education.
