AASL Standards now crosswalked to Next Generation Science Standards

CHICAGO – As part of its continued commitment to provide school library professionals the materials and resources needed to implement its “National School Library Standards,” the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has released a crosswalk aligning the AASL Standards to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The crosswalk and accompanying how-to-read document are downloadable and printable PDFs are available on the .

"The committee recognized early on that variances in language and specificity mean that there is not always a clean fit," explained Deborah Rinio, task force chair. "To improve the ability of users to see the connections between the NGSS and AASL Standards and thereby utilize the crosswalk to collaborate on interdisciplinary experiences, the committee decided to align the crosswalk to the science and engineering practices of the NGSS, with performance expectations identified in parentheses beside each practice. Furthermore, NGSS is a content-focused set of standards designed for instructional purposes. As a result, the crosswalk is aligned with the learner framework only, and not the school library or school librarian frameworks, and is organized by grade level."

"Crosswalks are terrific tools that facilitate conversation and collaborative planning," said Mary Keeling, AASL President. "It is so exciting to see the possibilities for school librarians to guide learners to deepen their science knowledge through these crosswalked standards. School librarians can use the new crosswalk to the Next Generation Science Standards to open conversations and establish common ground with science teachers. The AASL member volunteers on this task force have created a very useful tool for all school librarians."

Other national teaching and learning standards are being reviewed by AASL for possible future crosswalks and will be posted on the as they are completed. AASL also plans to create professional learning resources to assist practitioners in developing their own local crosswalks as needed to supplement the national crosswalks published by the association.
