91´«Ã½ President Loida Garcia-Febo presents webinar: 'Libraries, Comics and Superheroes of Color: Strengthening our Reading Communities'
91´«Ã½
The Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table is happy to partner with 91´«Ã½ President Loida Garcia-Febo to host a free webinar on the impact of representation and reflection of communities of color in comics. Please join us on June 12th for the "Libraries, Comics, and Superheroes of Color: Strengthening our Reading Communities" webinar. .
Comics have a valuable role in teaching literacy and are a format increasingly available at academic, public and school libraries. Children, teens and people off all ages are empowered by the timely issues impacting our world and communities included in comics and it is even more impactful when we can promote reading through comics reflecting our communities of color.
This webinar will discuss the power and potential of comics as lenses and mirrors - reflecting readers, their communities and offering important windows into new worlds and viewpoints. How do comics help support these aspects and strengthen our reading communities in ways that far often exceed print only texts? From the rise of Miles Morales and Kamala Khan to the global success of Black Panther and Into the Spiderverse, our panelists will offer insights on potential they see for representational growth of comics and increased visibility of superheroes of color.
Panelists for this webinar include:
- Saladin Ahmed, Marvel writer on Magnificent Ms. Marvel and Miles Morales: Spider-Man
- Chloe Ramos-Peterson, Library Marketing Coordinator at Image Comics
- Deirdre Hollman, educator and Founder and Creative Director of the Black Comics Collective.
- Moderator: Erwin Magbanua - Principal Librarian, Chula Vista Library
