CHICAGO – The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), with the support of Bound To Stay Bound Books, will create and distribute 100 “AASL District Kits for the National School Library Standards” to support nationwide implementation of the association’s National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries. “I am so excited to announce the release of the AASL District Kits for the National School Library Standards,” said AASL President Kathryn Roots Lewis. “The kits were designed for several types of school librarians, specifically, those who are solo librarians or those who do not have access to national, state or local professional development about the standards. These unique kits will support school librarians as they explore and implement the National School Library Standards to transform teaching and learning for all learners in their school communities.”

“Bound To Stay Bound Books is delighted to support the educational efforts for the 2018 AASL National School Library Standards,” said President Bob Sibert. “Because the new Standards help move the school library profession forward, it is important to get librarians far and wide familiar with them as quickly as possible.”

The AASL District Kits are based on professional development that was presented by the North Carolina School Library Media Association, a project for which NCSLMA received the 2018 AASL Past-Presidents Planning Grant for National School Library Standards. Each kit includes materials to support the facilitation of seven hours of professional development. These materials include a facilitator handbook, all necessary handouts, a National School Library Standards Card Game, and $50 grant for refreshments and supplemental materials.

Each AASL District Kit will provide materials for ten participants, however districts with a smaller or larger number of attendees may apply. If selected, an appropriate amount of materials will be sent. Priority will be given to districts providing professional development to a group of solo school librarians, school librarians from combined small school districts, or larger districts that will incorporate outlying solo librarians or smaller districts. The applicant must be a current, personal member of AASL.
