If you want to gain a practical overview of Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress Classification, our new eCourse bundle is for you. Over a three-month period, you will work closely with expert instructors that will teach you how to assign both DDC and LCC numbers with correct meaning in hierarchy and how to analyze the contents of a resource and use Library of Congress Subject Headings controlled vocabulary.   1. with Violet Fox – 4-week eCourse; begins May 6, 2019

Starting with the basics, this eCourse will teach you how to assign DDC numbers with correct meaning in hierarchy, build numbers using tables, and apply numbers that help patrons browse your library.

  1. with Bobby Bothmann – 4-week eCourse; begins June 3, 2019

Gain a comprehensive grounding in Library of Congress Classification (LCC) principles and practice. This eCourse teaches you how to assign LCC numbers with correct meaning in hierarchy, build numbers using tables, and apply numbers that help patrons browse your library.

  1. – 6-week eCourse; begins July 1, 2019

This eCourse introduces you to the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) vocabulary and explains the various types of topical and free-floating subject terms. You will learn how to analyze the contents of a resource and convert that analysis into the LCSH controlled vocabulary.

By participating in this group of three courses, you’ll earn a Certificate of Professional Development in Practical Classification and Subject Access Cataloging and gain a broad set of skills that will serve you throughout your career.

About the Instructors

Violet Fox is one of the editors of the Dewey Decimal Classification. She received her MLIS from the University of Washington in 2013. Her research interests include the intricacies of zine cataloging and the ethical implications of classification.

Bobby Bothmann is metadata & emerging technologies librarian at Minnesota State University, Mankato where he holds the rank of professor in Library Services. Bothmann's primary duties include cataloging books and electronic resources, managing large files full of MARC records, and investigating mobile resources and other new technologies. Bothmann has been an active member of OLAC (OnLine Audiovisual Catalogers) since fall 2000 and has served in various leadership roles including treasurer and president. He is a standing member of the editorial board and former Cataloging News editor for Cataloging & Classification Quarterly. He holds an MLIS from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee UWM and an MS in Geography and English Technical Communication from MSU Mankato. Bothmann is an adjunct instructor for the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he teaches cataloging and classification courses.
