CHICAGO—The Association of Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2019 ProQuest Coutts Award for Innovation. Maria Savova, Director of Collections and Technical Services at The Claremont Colleges Library, is recognized for her leadership in developing and promoting a faceted acquisitions budget structure optimized for the always evolving electronic resources environment. The award recognizes significant and innovative contributions to electronic collections management and development practice. The recipient receives a $2,000 award generously donated by and a citation. The ProQuest Coutts Award for Innovation will be presented on Saturday, June 22, at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony during the 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) Annual Conference & Exhibition in Washington, D.C.
Savova began developing a faceted acquisitions budget structure in 2012 at The Claremont Colleges Library as a way to keep pace with an increasing variety of resources and the new ways that libraries acquire them. Recognizing the need for significant budget restructuring and for a multi-dimensional model to replace the failing two-dimensional one that is still in use at many academic libraries, Savova developed a 21st century, four-dimensional model that can be tailored to support any academic library’s unique situation. It supports planning, monitoring, communication and advocacy and empowers libraries to optimize where and how their limited funds are spent. Academic library acquisitions budget structures are increasingly no longer able to meet the need to provide accurate, efficient and effective answers to basic budget questions, especially in the new majority e-resources environment. Savova’s faceted structure is able to meet these standards and surpass them. Since implementing a faceted budget structure at her own institution, she has helped others follow suit by freely sharing information via workshops, presentations and publications.
