CHICAGO—The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) has selected Casey Mullin, Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services at Western Washington University, as the recipient of the 2019 Esther J. Piercy Award. The award will be presented on Saturday, June 22 at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony during the 2019 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) Annual Conference & Exhibition in Washington D.C.

Casey Mullin's career demonstrates sustained contributions and leadership in the field of library technical services. Prior to assuming his current position, Mullin served as Head of the Data Control Unit at Stanford University followed by that of Music Cataloger at the New York Public Library. While Mullin’s work demonstrates leadership in library technical services broadly, his many contributions illustrate a passion for music cataloging. With his extensive record of service, presentations and publications, Casey Mullin has been a significant presence in the field since receiving his MLIS from Indiana University, Bloomington. In recognition for his work on developing metadata standards and vocabularies, he was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) Policy Committee at the Library of Congress (LC). He has held many positions in the Music Library Association (MLA) including Chair of the Vocabularies Subcommittee and Chair of the RDA Music Implementation Task Force. He has served on the Executive Board of the Music OCLC Users Group since 2011 and chaired the ALCTS Cataloging and Metadata Management Section Working Group on Full Implementation of LC Faceted Vocabularies. Each appointment enhances a career focused on collaboration and discovery. Mullin’s commitment to sharing his knowledge and experience can also be seen in his numerous presentations and his participation as an instructor for MLA’s webinar series “Introduction to LC Faceted Vocabularies for Music” in 2018.

Through sustained engagement with the profession, Mullin exemplifies the qualities highlighted by the Piercy Award. The Piercy Award was established in memory of Esther J. Piercy, editor of the Journal of Cataloging and Classification from 1950 to 1956 and of Library Resources & Technical Services from 1957 to 1967. The award recognizes the contributions by a librarian with no more than 10 years of professional experience who has shown outstanding promise for continuing contributions and leadership in the areas of librarianship included in library collections and technical services. The recipient receives a $1,500 grant donated by and a citation in recognition of his accomplishments.
