Brakel and Carroll Seek 2020-2021 AASL Presidency

CHICAGO – AASL members Lisa Brakel and Kathy Carroll will seek the 2020-2021 AASL presidential term during the 2019 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) election. The full slate of AASL candidates can be found at .

Lisa Brakel is the district librarian for Airport Community Schools in Carleton, MI. She is currently serving on the AASL Board of Directors as the Member-at-Large. She has served as an AASL Affiliate Assembly representative from Michigan and as president of MAME, Michigan's state organization for school librarians. She is also a recent recipient of MAME's Margaret Grazier Award for Contribution to the Profession.

“It has been my honored pleasure to serve on the AASL Board as your Member-at-Large for the past two years,” said Brakel. “As we have worked together to support our colleagues in implementing the newly revised standards and in responding to ESSA’s library-related provisions, I have been inspired by the dedication and devotion of our members. At Midwinter we will begin the development of our new strategic plan. I know that this will serve as the blueprint for AASL’s future work together. I would welcome the opportunity to continue my work with AASL and to lead our organization into its bright future. Together, we are school library strong!”

Kathy Carroll is the lead school librarian for the Westwood High School Library Information Center in Columbia, SC. She is currently serving as an 91´«Ã½ Councilor-at-Large and as a member of the 91´«Ã½ Spectrum Advisory Committee. Carroll is a past member of the AASL Board of Directors, serving as the Regional Director for Region 4 and member of the AASL Presidential Initiative Committee.

"It is an honor to run for the position of AASL President-Elect," said Carroll. "Having served as a Regional Director and working in numerous capacities within our organization, I have witnessed the passion and vast contributions made by school librarians. If elected, I will tirelessly work on behalf of our profession to enhance relationships with all stakeholders, implement our strategic plan and new standards, and advocate and provide resources for librarians to continue strengthening our involvement and impact on school communities."

Ballot mailing for the 2019 election will begin on March 11 and will close at 11:59 p.m. on April 3, 2019. To vote, AASL membership must be current as of January 31, 2019.
