Sarah Smarsh’s Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth chosen for 91´«Ã½’s Book Club Central

CHICAGO – Honorary Book Club Central Chair Sarah Jessica Parker has selected Sarah Smarsh’s Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth (Scribner) as her latest pick for the 91´«Ã½’s (91´«Ã½) Book Club Central. Smarsh, born a fifth generation Kansas wheat farmer on her paternal side, and the product of generations of teen mothers on her maternal side, has written a memoir that combines personal narrative with powerful analysis and cultural commentary. A finalist for the National Book Award, Heartland examines the myths about people thought to be less because they earn less.

“I’m honored to announce the newest selection for Book Club Central, Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth by Sarah Smarsh,” said Ms. Parker. “Ms. Smarsh writes with authority and urgency about the entrenched deprivation of overlooked Americans born into poverty across the country. Her straightforward, empathetic storytelling is motivated by a deeply-saturated love for her family and Kansas home and brings readers into the heart of what it means to live with brokenness and resilience every day. I look forward to sharing this important book with all of you at your libraries.”

“As a writer who documents socioeconomic inequality, I see libraries as guardians of democracy, ensuring access to books and safe public spaces for enjoying them,” said Ms. Smarsh. “The 91´«Ã½'s Book Club Central goes an exciting step further by bringing books to life with group discussion, which sews a strong social fabric. I'm humbled and thrilled that Ms. Parker has selected my book for an initiative so close to my heart.”

Sarah Smarsh has covered socioeconomic class, politics, and public policy for the Guardian, The New York Times, the Texas Observer, Pacific Standard, the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, and many other publications. A recent Joan Shorenstein Fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and a former professor of nonfiction writing, Smarsh is a frequent speaker on economic inequality and related media narratives. She lives in Kansas. Heartland is her first book.

Booklist called Heartland “a trenchant analysis of the realities of an economic inequality whose cultural divide allows ‘the powerful to make harmful decisions in policy and politics.’ Elucidating reading on the challenges many face in getting ahead.”

Ms. Parker’s previous picks for Book Club Central have been No One is Coming to Save Us by Stephanie Powell Watts, Exit West by Mohsin Hamid, Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo, Anatomy of a Miracle by Jonathan Miles, and She Would Be King by Wayétu Moore. In addition to being Honorary Chair of Book Club Central, Ms. Parker is an Honorary Lifetime Board Member of United for Libraries, a division of 91´«Ã½, a role she is using to raise awareness about the integral role of Friends groups in the library.

Book Club Central, designed in consultation with expert librarians, provides the public with the very best in reading and is a place for engaging content and information for book clubs and readers everywhere.
