CHICAGO – ASGCLA will be hosting a new webinar, “Libraries and Community Health: Prescribing Programs that Support Your Community’s Needs” on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 12:00 noon Central Time.
This webinar is designed to help librarians understand the role of public, academic, special or school libraries in advocating for and contributing to Community Health. While many libraries provide access to health information, targeted and refined programs can more effectively address communities’ needs, especially for underserved and vulnerable populations. These include minority, rural, LGBTQIA, and Veterans.
The presenter, Sarah Carnes, MLIS, AHIP, Clinical Librarian for Bedford VAMC Medical Library, will explain the definition of Community Health, highlighting the health disparities in special populations, and describe the traditional and potential roles of libraries in Community Health initiatives. As a veteran herself, Sarah is honored to provide health information services to vulnerable populations and partnering with public libraries and local organizations to enhance community health.
In addition, the webinar will cover how to develop programs by conducting community assessments, identifying stakeholders and partners, and producing initiatives that are purposeful and relevant. Ms. Carnes will explain how a logic model can help the audience members develop outcome based, tenable, and relevant programs. She will also describe future trends and needs that are likely to touch many communities and especially libraries, including an aging population, increasing technology gaps, and budget challenges.
Attendees will gain a thorough understanding of the need and potential for libraries to advocate for and enhance their Communities’ Health. They will also receive a list of tools and resources that will support their initiatives, as well as a list of potential partners with whom they can collaborate to maximize their capabilities and impact.
