CHICAGO—Nominations are being accepted for the 2019 Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) awards for outstanding achievement and promise in the field of cataloging, classification, and metadata management. The awards are presented by the Cataloging and Metadata Management Section of ALCTS. One award honors an individual who shows promise in the field of metadata, while the other recognizes an individual whose work represents the finest achievements in research, collaboration, creative work, leadership and service.

If you are interested in nominating a candidate for either of these awards, contact the chair of that award jury. The deadline for nominations and supporting materials is Dec. 1.

Lois Mai Chan Professional Development Grant

This grant is awarded to provide librarians and paraprofessionals from under-represented groups new to the metadata field with the opportunity to attend a professional conference and encourages professional development through active participation at the national level. The grant is to be used for airfare, lodging, and registration fees to attend the 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference. The award consists of $1,000, donated by Netanel Ganin, and registration to the next Annual Conference. Eligible applicants may apply more than once. Winners will be chosen based on: evidence of or interest in a career as a library metadata specialist as demonstrated by activities that may include (but are not limited to) past coursework, internships, jobs, special projects, and publications; candidate’s written justification for the grant in terms of commitment to and interest in metadata-related work; identification with an under-represented group; letter(s) of reference; and a vita.

Margaret Mann Citation

This award is presented to a cataloger or classifier for outstanding professional achievement in the areas of cataloging or classification through publication, participation in professional cataloging associations or valuable contributions to practice in individual libraries. The Cataloging and Metadata Management Section administers the award, a citation and $2,000 to the library school of the winner's choice, which is donated by OCLC, Inc. The Mann Citation committee bases its selection on nominations made by members of the profession or friends of the profession. Anyone with a worthy candidate is urged to nominate that person. Achievements to be considered include: notable publications; outstanding contribution to the activities of professional cataloging associations; outstanding contribution to the technical improvement of cataloging and classification and/or the introduction of a new technique of recognized importance; and outstanding contribution in the area of teaching cataloging and classification.
