CHICAGO – The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has released a revised application process and rubric for its National School Library of the Year Award (NSLY) that aligns the elements of the award with the newly released AASL “National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries.” Established in 1963, the award recognizes school libraries as an unique and essential part of their learning community. NSLY, sponsored by Follett, honors school libraries exemplifying implementation of AASL's Standards.

“Using our experience of having previously served on the selection committee for this distinguished award, the members worked to clearly identify what type of evidence that would exemplify the current Standards,” said Eileen Kern, task force chair. “The members of the task force had thoughtful conversations on each of the Shared Foundations. Our goal was for the recipient of this prestigious award to be an outstanding example of what the Standards look like in action.”

As part of the revised process, the school library must provide evidence of how the applicant demonstrates the Shared Foundations as defined in the AASL Standards: Inquire, Include, Collaborate, Curate, Engage, and Explore. Applicants must submit an electronic portfolio which includes a community profile, collection report and letters of endorsement. The application for the 2019 the National School Library of the Year Award will open in fall 2018.
