91´«Ã½

The 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) has selected Samantha A. Hyde of Akron, Ohio as the 2018 Christopher Hoy/ERT Scholarship recipient.

The scholarship was named for a long-time 91´«Ã½ staff member who directed the 91´«Ã½ Conference Services Office for more than 20 years. This scholarship fund was established with donations from Christopher J. Hoy and the Exhibits Round Table (ERT) to honor his memory. The $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a person pursuing a master's degree in library and information studies.

As an undergraduate student, Hyde was a triple major in Dance, History, and Black Studies. According to one of her former professors, Hyde “excelled in all three programs. Through her work at the Denver Public Library and the Colorado Ballet, she fused her passion for the arts and historical knowledge of racial difference to design and engage in a variety of inclusive educational programs.”

One Reference for Hyde stated that “She is a remarkable person—fully engaged in human interaction and learning.” This is clearly demonstrated in the multi-faceted interests that Hyde expresses in her current positions. In addition to being a preschool teaching assistant and a dance educator, Hyde also conducts research for and assists guests of the Hale Farm and Village (a historic property/museum of the Western Reserve Historical Society in Bath, Ohio that highlights life in the 1800’s).

Hyde stated that although her “ambitions in the library profession are vast, they strike at the core of supporting people.” She wants to use the knowledge and skills she gains through earning her MLIS to partner the arts with cultural organizations for programming activities.” She hopes to “promote libraries as safe spaces while providing quality, community-driven programming.”

Hyde plans to attend Indiana University.
