The 91´«Ã½ and SAGE announced Kimberly D. Nicholson as the recipient of the 2018 Peter Lyman Memorial/SAGE Scholarship in New Media.
Nicholson wants to become a librarian because of “the profession’s positive impact on individuals and society.” Nicholson is concerned with the digital divide, which she views as “more than a lack of access to hardware.” She believes that “those who have grown accustomed to doing without frequently do not see the value in having access to technologies.” According to Nicholson, libraries can play a role in reducing the gap by providing resources, information, and access to technology. Nicholson stated, “Librarians can engage with members of the community through educational events and simultaneously introduce patrons to new technologies in a non-threatening and supportive manner.”
In discussing the positive attributes of Nicholson, one reference said that “she brings a passion and commitment to the field of learning and dedication to keeping current with innovations, research, theories, technologies, and trends.” Yet another reference stated that she “is an exceptional individual who is committed to excellence in every endeavor that she pursues. She sees the bigger picture in every task. Her ability to think critically and find effective strategies when problem solving is extraordinary.”
Nicholson’s beliefs regarding the value of libraries is no secret to those who know her. In highlighting aspects of Nicholson’s desire to become an integral part of the future of libraries, one reference commented, “In a day when community literacy is a mandate and the celebration of diversity strengthens said communities, it is individuals such as Ms. Nicholson who can empower people through information and technology for the benefit of all.”
Currently, Nicholson works as the business office manager at the Cedar Falls (Iowa) Public Library. She will be attending St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The Peter Lyman Memorial/SAGE Scholarship in New Media was created in memory of Peter Lyman, former university librarian and professor emeritus of the School of information at the University of California, Berkeley. Lyman’s research focused on online information, ethnographic analyses of online social relationships and communities, and bringing university librarians into the digital era. He was one of the first scholars to work with computer companies to design information technology appropriate for research and teaching.
