The 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) has selected Keiko Newsom of King City, Oregon as the 2018 Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship recipient.

The $3,000 award is given to an 91´«Ã½ or library support staff member to help finance the pursuit of a master’s degree in library and information studies. The scholarship was named in memory of Miriam L. Hornback, a longtime 91´«Ã½ staff member, who was secretariat to the 91´«Ã½ Council and Executive Board.

Ms. Newsom currently works as a library technician at Portland State University. She stated that her interests, “Have always been in supporting and contributing to people in learning environments. This was true when I was teaching languages and it has been true since I started working at the library.” She is especially interested in working with international students and immigrants new to the country. She says, “As someone who came to this country as an international student, I understand how challenging it can be to achieve an academic goal in a new country, and I am passionate about supporting others’ success.”

One reference stated that, “Ms. Newsom is a driven, dedicated library staff member, committed to providing excellent user services. Her depth of knowledge is strong. She is always willing to push herself to know more, understand better and be a collaborative colleague.”

Newsom stated, “It is my goal to be a part of supporting automation of the library and to help people learn how to access information.” This commitment is evident to those with which she works. One reference stated, “Not only does Ms. Newsom’s efforts highlight and encourage access to materials that provides different cultural viewpoints, but she also supports students from non-English or non-Western backgrounds.”

Another reference stated that Ms. Newsom has the “ability to think and respond quickly, sensitively and accurately during stressful situations. She is not afraid of asking questions or examining problems and issues from a variety of viewpoints. She is curious, tenacious, and dedicated to providing solutions that not only benefit library users, but also improve library processes.”

Newsom will attend the University of Washington (Seattle).
