CHICAGO—The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) congratulates the recipient of the 2018 Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award, Susan Davis. Presented by the of ALCTS, this award consists of a citation and $1,500 donated by and is given for distinguished contributions to serials librarianship. The award will be presented at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony on June 23, 2018, during the 2018 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans, La.

Susan Davis, head of acquisitions and associate librarian at the University at Buffalo Libraries, is a name that is synonymous with “serials.” Davis has a deep and sustained record of professional accomplishments and contributions in the field of serials librarianship. Over her 37-year career, she has accomplished it all with an infectious enthusiasm and energy well-known among her peers.

Active participation in one professional organization is meaningful enough, but Davis has simultaneously been active in both ALCTS and NASIG. She has been a member of ALCTS since 1980, serving in various roles culminating in her election to the office of ALCTS Director at Large from 2010-2013. Davis participated in the founding of NASIG in 1986 and has served in just about every possible role since. She has been elected to the offices of NASIG Treasurer, Secretary, and Vice-President/President/Past President. As co-chair of the Conference Planning Committee for the NASIG annual meeting held in Buffalo in 2013, she was focused on every detail and the end result was well-received by all those who attended.

Her expertise, communicated through publications and presentations, reflects the critical issues affecting serials librarians over the last decade and a half. She has authored a book for ALCTS, co-authored numerous book chapters, and published articles in Library Resources and Technical Services and Serials Review all focused on critical issues affecting serials librarians. Davis has served as an editor of two columns: “Profiles” in the NASIG Newsletter from 2007-2012 and “Serials Spoken Here: Reports of Conferences, Institutes and Seminars” in Serials Review from 1995-2006. Her popular presentations in the areas of e-resources, serials, and acquisitions, hone in on issues that are near and dear to Davis’ heart. The research she contributes is extremely practical and therefore beneficial to her fellow librarians. This is reflected in her ongoing role as an online instructor of ALCTS’ Fundaments of Electronic Resource Acquisitions.

As a supporting letter noted, “Susan Davis has made numerous distinguished contributions to serials librarianship, thus making her more than deserving of the Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award. It is easy to overlook Susan’s service, as much of it has been devoted to the day in and day out, deceptively “small” tasks associated with effective professional leadership and active membership, but her cumulative effect is powerful and noteworthy. Susan is the consummate professional: a pleasure to be around and an excellent mentor and role model.”
