NEW YORK – Today Rita Platt, teacher-librarian at St. Croix Falls Elementary in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, was named a winner of this year’s I Love My Librarian Award. Platt is being recognized for her leadership in transforming lives and communities through education and lifelong learning. She is one of only 10 librarians in the country this year to receive this national honor.

Platt is commended for turning the library into the hub of the school where students are inspired to read and write. Colleagues say her efforts have led to improved test scores that have exceeded state expectations for the last several years.

Platt turned her old office into a free bookstore for students: by reading, students can earn “book bucks” to purchase books. She also helped the school’s third-grade team develop a “3rd Grade Writer’s Conference,” an all-day writing event for kids, who gained confidence as writers during author-led sessions.

She works with fourth-grade students and teachers on the “Battle of the Books” competition, raising the school’s standing in the last few years. Last year, the school won third place in the state.

Platt also encourages families to spend time together learning in the school library by hosting special events such as game night, science night and read night.

Platt will receive a $5,000 prize at an award ceremony and reception to be held this evening in New York City. The ceremony is hosted by Carnegie Corporation of New York, which co-sponsors the award along with The New York Public Library and The New York Times. The 91´«Ã½ administers the award through its Public Awareness Office, which promotes the value of libraries and librarians.

As part of the award process, library users are invited to nominate librarians working in public, school, college, community college and university libraries. This year 1,125 nominations were submitted by library users nationwide detailing how their favorite librarians have gone above and beyond to improve community members’ lives.

In the United States there are 190,000 librarians working in libraries of all types, and only 100 librarians have been selected for this distinguished honor since the award’s inception in 2008.
