September webinar focuses on measuring effect of digital literacy services

CHICAGO – Nearly all public libraries offer some sort of digital literacy services, ranging from group computer classes to individual tutoring assistance, but how do library staff know their efforts are achieving the desired effect? How can libraries provide consistent digital literacy programs that answer their patrons' most frequently asked questions? How can libraries measure the success of these services and identify areas for improvement? These are just a few of the questions that will be addressed through the Public Library Association's September webinar.
PLA has two free tools developed to help public libraries boost their digital literacy program offerings and measure the effect of their services. provides tutorials on essential basic technologies designed for use in the training of library patrons with the option to create a custom site branded for the library. provides simple survey tools to measure the outcomes of programs and services. PLA's free webinar, , will explain how libraries can use these tools in tandem to augment their digital literacy training offerings and measure the impact of digital literacy services.
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will:
- Understand how DigitalLearn.org can be used to provide digital literacy training in public libraries, and how a library can benefit from having a custom site;
- Understand how to utilize Project Outcome surveys to measure digital literacy services (including classes, individual appointments, and online training such as DigitalLearn.org);
- Be able to apply strategies for measuring patron outcomes in a one-on-one instructional setting such as drop-in computer help or individual computer assistance; and
- Be able to administer surveys to patrons following digital literacy training.
The webinar will be held from 1-2 p.m. Central Time on Thursday, September 14. Participation is free, but registration is required and space is limited. .
