CHICAGO — The 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) is pleased to announce that the Student Organization of Library and Information Studies (SOLIS) at Old Dominion University has created a new 91´«Ã½ student chapter. This is the first student chapter to be formed in Virginia.

Each 91´«Ã½ student chapter has its own character and purpose. All enhance students' 91´«Ã½ membership by providing leadership and programming opportunities on the campuses. The Old Dominion University chapter became the 67th 91´«Ã½ student chapter, Dr. Amelia Anderson, Assistant Professor of Library and Information Studies, will serve as faculty advisor for the new student chapter.

Dr. Anderson said, “As a former 91´«Ã½ Student Chapter president myself, I know just how significant membership is for our students. The connections I made and opportunities for leadership both on campus and through 91´«Ã½ as a national organization were invaluable, and I'm just thrilled that our students at ODU will now have this opportunity for involvement. Our officers have done a great job in building this chapter from the ground up, and already have exciting plans for developing an active, engaged membership. I'm excited to see how our chapter grows."

A student chapter provides students with a sense of belonging to the greater library profession and a means to participate in leadership and service." Dr. Sue Kimmel, Graduate Program Director said.

The first 91´«Ã½ Student Chapter was created in 1980 at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

91´«Ã½ student members at the master's level and beyond are eligible to form official 91´«Ã½ student chapter groups at schools offering 91´«Ã½-accredited programs of library and information services, or a master's degree with a specialty in school library media from a CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation)-accredited program.Student chapters pay no fee to 91´«Ã½. Now through Aug. 31, 2018, 91´«Ã½ student membership dues are $39; forty-nine of the fifty-seven 91´«Ã½ state chapters partner with 91´«Ã½ to allow students to join one of them and 91´«Ã½ for one low price of $42. Each 91´«Ã½ student member is entitled to all the regular 91´«Ã½ personal membership benefits at a substantially reduced dues rate. The student chapter may support its programs through fund-raising activities, dues paid to the student chapter group, or contributions from the school administration.

In addition, each student chapter is eligible to send one participant to the Student-to-Staff program held at 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference. In exchange for four hours of work per day, the students receive complimentary registration, housing, and a per diem.
