91´«Ã½
The 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) has selected Olivia Rose Muzzy of Bremerton, Washington as the 2017 Christopher Hoy/ERT Scholarship recipient.
The scholarship was named for a long-time 91´«Ã½ staff member who directed the 91´«Ã½ Conference Services Office for more than 20 years. This scholarship fund was established with donations from Christopher J. Hoy and the Exhibits Round Table (ERT) to honor his memory. The $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a person pursuing a master's degree in library and information studies.
Muzzy began working in libraries at age 19, and has continued to expand her career in this area. Working as the Public Services Supervisor of Kitsap Regional Library in Poulsbo, Washington, Muzzy said, “Our library system is a cultural intersection, always growing and adapting to meet our community's needs. Kitsap County is unique both demographically and geographically. Our library serves two local Native American tribes, and our Little Boston location is a tribal library. With multiple Navy bases throughout the county, we also serve military service members and their families. In addition, we are connected to Seattle by three ferry routes. I want our library to be a community leader, connecting patrons not only to resources, but also to one another. Libraries are places to engage, to learn, and to thrive. Earning my MLIS degree will allow me to better identify what Kitsap County needs from its library system and to help allocate our resources accordingly. I'm particularly interested in developing programs based around shared creative spaces, to promote common experiences in our diverse community.”
One Reference said, “Olivia is highly intelligent and flexible in her approach to problem-solving. She is unafraid of technology and enjoys exploring it. She regularly trouble-shoots tech problems and has established a strong and healthy relationship with our IT Team. Olivia comes fresh to each situation and has a delightful openness to learning, discovering, and exhaustive sleuthing. She integrates emotional intelligence as she moves through all levels in our organization with grace, good humor, and singular purpose. Olivia has found her life's work at the library. In the core of who she is, Olivia is a librarian.
Yet another Reference stated, “Olivia is particularly strong in paraprofessional leadership (so needed in our field). She can be both soothing and inspiring for a team of diverse personalities while implementing challenging organizational changes.
Another reference said, “Olivia is bright and articulate. She is an amazing problem solver and more importantly, she has a warm, professional personality that allows her to get along with everyone. As a supervisor, she has expertly handled difficult conversations. She is a natural leader. Olivia is one of those individuals that you meet in life and suddenly your world is a better place. I would go out of my way to have Olivia be part of my team!
Muzzy plans to attend San Jose State University (Calif.).
