Ross Atkinson award given to Jeanne Drewes

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) is pleased to name Jeanne Drewes, chief of the Binding & Collections Care Division and the Deacidification Program at the Library of Congress, as the 2017 recipient of the Ross Atkinson Lifetime Achievement Award. The award honors the memory of Ross Atkinson, a distinguished library leader, author and scholar whose extraordinary service to ALCTS and the library community-at-large serves as a model for those in the field. The citation and monetary award, , will be presented at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony on June 24, 2017, during the 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) Annual Conference and Exhibition in Chicago.

Drewes is a true “Renaissance woman,” whose notable career spans not only four decades but a wide range of library types, including in addition to the Library of Congress, public universities (University of Missouri, Michigan State University), private universities (Johns Hopkins), special libraries (Ecodyne), law libraries (Baylor), regional libraries (Linda Hall, Pittsburgh Regional Library Center), and museums (University of Michigan). Her extensive service to ALCTS includes elected and appointed positions including managing editor of the “ALCTS Monograph” series; chair of the Working Group on Preservation Week; member of the International Relations and Publications Committees; secretary of PARS; co-chair of the Preservation Administrators Interest Group; chair of the PARS Program Planning and Publications Committee; and chair of the PARS Working Group on Oral History.

She has been an outstanding representative of ALCTS and the broader library community nationally and internationally by serving first as the ALCTS and, subsequently, as the Library of Congress representative to the IFLA Preservation & Conservation Section; member of 91´«Ã½’s CALM (the Committee on Archives, Libraries and Museums) and International Relations Round Table; member of the 91´«Ã½ President's Committee on Preservation Policy; and Governing Board member of the American Institute for Conservation.

Her list of publications includes more than twenty articles, chapters and reviews, in addition to two edited books. Her many speaking engagements include presentations at 91´«Ã½ and IFLA conferences, the Newberry Library, the World Congress of the International Association of Agricultural Information, the University Risk Managers and Insurance Association Conference and the North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG). She has served as a grants reviewer for the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the New York State Preservation Program.

Drewes’ knowledge and expertise have been marked with 91´«Ã½’s 2012 Ken Haycock Award for Promoting Librarianship; 91´«Ã½’s Federal and Armed Forces Libraries Round Table 2015 Achievement Award; and ALCTS’ 2015 Paul Banks and Carolyn Harris Preservation Award.

As one of her nominators states, “Jeanne Drewes is, in my estimation, the most important figure in raising the profile of preservation in the last two decades. Her work at LC, 91´«Ã½ and across the profession has made the field, and preservation professionals, continue to be relevant in today’s dynamic library environment.”

The is the national association for information providers who work in collections and technical services, such as acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, preservation and continuing resources in digital and print formats. ALCTS is a division of the 91´«Ã½.
